The Purpose of this group on the University of Richmond Campus is to raise money for those suffering from Pulmonary Disorders. The goal of this group is to help subsidize the astronomical cost of treatment and transplantation associated with Lung Diseases.
The reason this group was created is because I have a very close past with lung diseases. On June 12, 2010 my father died from Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis from which he suffered for several years. The cost of his treatment by the time of his death was over $250,000. The goal of this group is not to subsidize the entire cost (that would be impossible), but to simply provide some economic help to those who are ill because the cost of healthcare today is unbelievable.
When my father died, we opened a fund with the American Pulmonary Association and raised tens of thousands of dollars from family, friends, and organizations. My mentality of this is that someone doesn’t have to die before we make some effort to help them and others going through the same thing. From this, we also get the humbling experience of knowing those who lead considerably more challenging lives than us.
This organization was founded at the University of Richmond in the Spring of 2011. The Richmond Pulmonary Association, serving the University of Richmond and the surrounding community, is committed to raising awareness and financial assistance to local families and individuals suffering from pulmonary disorders. The organization accomplishes its mission by hosting fundraisers, campus events, tabling, and educational seminars.
